Andrew Steppat Leaves His Mark On FASCAR
It was the annual running of the FASCAR Daytona 200 last evening, and it marked a couple of changes for the FRL's premiere stock car series. The big change was the move from Forza 6 to the Forza 7 engine. While it wasn't the smoothest of beginnings on the evening, qualifying did get run and Nicholas Hargrove in his #5 Toyota Camry won pole for the race.
Once the green flag dropped however, Ethan Maestri in his #3 Ford Fusion rocketed to the front and led the openning laps of the 80 lap event. Nicholas would fall into his draft and the two would play a chessmatch at 200+ miles per hour for over 20 laps. Andrew Steppat, in his first FASCAR event, would fall into line behind Paul Maestri for several laps before moving his #01 Chevy around the #6 Ford to take over 3rd position about 10 laps into the race. Travis Billingsley in his #18 Toyota would work around Tony Tyree early on and settle into 5th position.
Initial pit stops came around lap 27 and shook up the standings a bit. Nicholas Hargrove had taken over the lead as Ethan came to the pit lane first. As the cars cycled through their stops, Andrew Steppat moved into first place with Ethan Maestri hot on his bumper. Nicholas and Paul would run together a few hundred feet further back, vying for third place. Andrew and Ethan ran a tight battle for the lead spot for another 25 laps until Ethan botched his entry into pit lane, sliding across the grass and ending his chance for victory. After pit stops were finished, Andrew was far out in front of the rest of the field, but over the remaining 20 laps, Nicholas came on like a rocket, closing to within 300 feet of Andrew before running out of laps. Andrew took the checkered flag and the win at Daytona Superspeedway.
Nicholas Hargrove comes in second, continuing an impressive showing at the 2.5 mile speedways. Ethan Maestri, despite the lawn mowing antics, finished in third position. Paul Maestri, running the #6 livery of Mark Martin, proved a consistent runner crossing the line in fourth place. Travis Billingsley didn't have the pace, but fared better than Tony Tyree, even after side-swiping the #47 Chevy in the late stages of the race. Travis would cross in fifth place. Tony didn't have the pace either, but hung on tenaciously, even after falling several laps down due to damage from brushing the wall at speed, and later with some help from Travis.
Drivers for the FRL have a long wait for the next One-Off event, to be announced soon.

FRL Season 7 - Finale At Road Atlanta
The final race of FRL Season 7 took place at Road Atlanta and would see the passing of two mantles. The first of these would be the passing of the mantle from Forza 6 to Forza 7. After nearly two and a half years of Forza 6, the FRL moves ahead with the latest in console racing software. Details of the future of the series will be coming soon.
The other mantle would be the passing of "title champion" from Andrew Steppat to Travis Billingsley. The #18 MX-5 dominated the series from the mid-point of the series on, aided in part, by a missed event from the #001 of Steppat. Whether or not Steppat missing an event would have a direct effect on Billingsley's win is, at this point, moot. With 19 points on the night with the bonus point for setting a record shattering 1:06 lap time, Travis clears the second place Andrew by 17 points, giving him the Season 7 title trophy.
For Andrew, the race at Atlanta was a near perfect way to send off Forza 6, as he has dominated most races in this game so he dominates at the final event, winning 2 of the 3 heats. Ethan Maestri had a return to form in this event. While he did have a huge stumble out of the gate in Heat 1, he did take advantage of the reverse grid for Heat 2 leading the event from flag-to-flag, giving him his first and only heat win of the season. His fourth place overall finish is his first outside of the Top 3 in his FRL career.
Paul Maestri earns the "Mr. Consistency" award this season, with a heat win and consistent Top 5's, he clears his MBR teammate taking third overall in the series. Nicholas Hargrove battled hard all season with Tony Tyree for a Top 5 in the points, but a rough night in Atlanta sealed his fate and gave Tony his 7th consecutive Top 5 finish. Nicholas would have to settle for 6th overall and a long off-season wait to get another chance at cracking the Top 5 again. Brandon Adkins was there for the fun, but tipped his hat a little when he exclaimed "Not last!" at the end of Heat 3, coming in just ahead of Nicholas. His return to the FRL is a welcome one, and his mostly regular participation yielded him 8th overall in the points out of 12 participating drivers.

Commissioner of FRL Set To Step Down
After more than 5 years as commissioner of the Forzday Racing League, Ethan Maestri gets set to step down from the position at the end of season 7 at Road Atlanta next weekend. The future of the FRL continues to be discussed and sorted for further racing. However, for Ethan, stepping down now fulfills a very important goal in getting the FRL established and viable.
"I never thought that I would always be overseeing the league. My goal has always been to steward this series to a point to where it had importance and investment by most of those that participate regularly. It's taken a few years, but the FRL feels like a race series that can stand on its own with or without my influence. Now that I feel that's been accomplished, it's time for me to step back and let others shape its future. It has been an honor to work with so many friends in developing this community that loves sim-racing."
Over the past few years, the FRL has been able to hold regular and varied series and has seen an overall growth in support and participation. While the formation of a committee to oversee the league is still being discussed, interest in the future of the series continues to be asked about as drivers and friends from Georgia to California look to the FRL to meet their sim-racing needs.
"It has been very gratifying to hear from fellow drivers that love and appreciate what the FRL has become and want to work to see its continued success. I look forward to seeing what the series will become and look forward to participating and playing my part, whatever that is, in its continued story. It will be nice to take a step back and let others make decisions, but leaving it altogether is simply not possible for me. I love racing, real or virtual, too much to simply walk away. Who knows, maybe this will be the step needed to up my race game and gain an advantage on Steppat, or at least get a foothold on that high step."
Details on the new administration of the FRL will become available in the coming weeks. Continue to check in on the FRL's blog page for the latest developments and announcements in the league.
