The Takeaway - Yas Marina

Heat1start.jpg

Round Two of the FRL’s Season 5 has concluded and the water is even muddier than before. What can we divine from the muck? Well, let’s look at the tape before we head on to Rio.

It was a breakout race for several drivers this past Sunday. After rejoining the FRL in early January, Paul Maestri struggled to find the Top 3 until a dominating performance at his home track, Road Atlanta. There he would score a second place finish in the FEC Championship. But even after getting that particular monkey off his back, it would be a few long months before cracking the Top 3 again. Last Sunday, Paul would demonstrate a level of driving from the veteran not seen in several seasons of FRL racing and he would further benefit from the premature exit of Andrew Steppat to score his first heat win since 2013. What’s more, he would overcome several setbacks in the second heat that would land him in position for his first overall event victory since Season 2 of the FRL back in 2012. All this comes at a moment in the series where there isn’t a clear dominant driver at the top of the pecking order. Paul’s win Sunday, combined with the internet ill’s of Andrew Steppat and unfortunate mis-queues by up-and-coming driver Travis Billingsley leads to a three way tie for the points lead as the series heads to Rio for the Race of Brazil.

Daniel Fleischmann made a stunning debut at a record setting event at Laguna Seca last April. The FEC event featured a 12 car field and one of the more challenging tracks of that particular series. However, Daniel handled his Ferrari 458 like a pro and finished strong with a 3rd place finish in his first ever FRL event. He would then follow up with an 8th place finish in the One Hour of Le Mans in the rain. Afterwhich he would disappear from the series for some time, until surfacing again this past Sunday. He would start from the back but quickly made his returned presence felt as he harassed the Maestri brothers for all 12 laps of the first heat. He would follow up that Top 3 finish with another P3 in the second heat behind Andrew Steppat and Travis Billingsley. With effort like that and a quick ascent in the points standings, Fleischmann’s S60 Volvo may be a key factor in determining the Top 5 of the series.

Drew Dilbeck and Allen Ruff also had personal best feathers to place in their caps after Sunday. Drew’s P4 overall finish is his highest since joining the league during the FEC campaign last Spring. Allen Ruff recovered from a poor start to the season and finishes with his first Top 5 finish in his brief FRL career as well. The resultant points impact is noticeable as Drew finds himself in the top five in points for the first time. Allen ties his RZM teammate Bryan Dean, who had to sit out due to illness, for the seventh spot with 10 points.

Not to be overlooked in all this is the struggle that two of the series veterans had in this event. Andrew Steppat suffered a lag-out in Heat 1- a heat he was leading. Ethan Maestri suffered a lag-out in the second heat just after passing his brother Paul and heading toward what could have been a 25 point victory for the #85. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. The bottom line being that if these issues continue for them - or any other drivers - further upsets will be possible.

The season is wide open as we head south of the equator to Rio de Janiero. The twisting terrain and uneven pavement of the streets of Rio promise to deliver even more action for Round 3 of the FRL WTCC series.

Race of United Arab Emirates - Recap

yasfield.jpg
It was a clean start for the Race of United Arab Emirates as Andrew Steppat starts strong in Heat 1

The drivers stepped off their yachts and straight into the garage area for the Race of United Arab Emirates this weekend at Yas Marina. The second stop in the FRL’s WTCC series would end up providing even less clarity about who would be the dominant driver as the season moved forward.

Heat 1 began well for our top qualifier Andrew Steppat, from pole, he would set the top lap on the night and looked to widen the gap on the field. Travis Billingsley had trouble on lap 1 as he would lose grip in the #18 Volvo and parked the nose in the wall around Turn 17. He would be forced to wait on the field of 11 other cars to clear his position before limping back to the pits for an early stop. Ethan Maestri got a great start and settled into third position but was hotly pursued by Paul Maestri and Daniel Fleischmann. These three would run within 3 seconds of each other for the duration of the race. Paul made ground on his brother and was able to cleanly pass him in Turn 11. The two would run nose-to-tail in P2 &3 for the rest of the race. Ethan would close on the #86 bumper on several laps but just couldn’t wedge the door wide enough to pass. Around the halfway mark of the heat, trouble developed for Andrew Steppat and would knock him out of the race. Sensing the opportunity from the leaders misfortune, the whole field pressed hard for a best finish. At the checkered flag, Paul Maestri would cash-in and showed a return to form by grabbing his first Heat 1 in Season 5. Following a half second back would be Ethan Maestri with a P2 finish and Daniel Fleischmann, making his first start in the WTCC series, would post a solid P3 finish. Travis would fight hard, and despite continued adversity from a damaged car, would post a P6 finish right behind Allen Ruff in P5 and Drew Dilbeck in P4.

Heat2Start.jpg
The start of Heat 2 would create even more chaos for the series
Heat 2 would see the reversed grid and immediately there was trouble for the Henderson brothers as both their cars would fail to make the start due to connection problems. Andrew Steppat would line up in P1 and would dominate this heat from flag to flag. Travis, chomping at the bit after a disappointing opening heat, would not be left behind again and quickly secured a P2 position that he would hold through to the checkered flag. Daniel Fleischmann would advance from a P8 start to secure P3 in the early stages and rode out the rest of the race in the top 3. Paul Maestri would stumble several times in this heat and looked to be giving up a win to his brother when Ethan suffered connection issues that caused the #85 RZM Audi to retire from the race as well. Paul would take his S3 and march up to P4, securing the victory and the 25 points for the night.

Tony Tyree had a rough start to the night, but would find redemption in Heat 2, he brought his #47 BMW home in the top 5. This secured an 8th place finish for him. His points, combined with Travis Billingsley’s P3 overall, netted Apex Racing top points on the night with 21 added to an already sizable team points lead. Drew Dilbeck was the leading RBR driver for this event, the only driver from the team to score points for the night. He would finish good enough to take P4 overall. RZM’s Allen Ruff looked to bounce back from a poor start to the season at Bathurst and did so nicely. He would finish P5 overall for the night, and was the top scoring driver for Razorback Motorsport.

The rookie battle cooled a bit as Matthew Smith suffered some pretty serious setbacks in both heats and failed to close the gap to Nicholas Hargrove. Nicholas didn’t run at the front, but kept the #5 Toyota’s nose clean and finished P9, one spot ahead of Matthew. As mentioned, Tom and Owen Henderson rounded out the field in P11 & 12 and didn’t net any points for the event.
The series heads over the Atlantic and south of the equator for the Race of Brazil in Rio de Janiero on October 9th.

The Takeaway - Race of Australia

After months of preparation, the race is run and the teams pack up and head off for their next destination. But lets take a moment and digest what we've seen at Bathurst.

Sure Apex and Razorback scored heat wins, Andrew Steppat starts off with the points lead and ran phenominal lap times in comparison to the rest of the field, etc. etc. But while its easy to just fixate on what happens at the front, taking a look further back can start to give you a glimpse of what future and fun is in store for the FRL.

For the first time in FRL history, we have four rookies going for the title in this season. Matthew Smith, while having raced in a few FRL events, is participating in his first full season of racing. His first heat looked sketchy as he settled into the event, laying down a fastest lap of 2:17.711. However, he would better his fastest lap by over a full second in the 2nd heat - a lap fully 6 tenths faster than his closest rookie opponent, Nicholas Hargrove. Despite only being able to flirt with 2:17 lap times, Nicholas is a true freshman in the FRL and shows promise for being able to hold his own. Making his (full event) driver debut at one of the toughest tracks and being able to finish inside the top ten in both heats speaks to talent with room to improve.

Owen and Tom Henderson both show promise as excellent drivers as well. While Owen would be sidelined with connection issues, his brother Tom managed to start the first race before getting kicked off later and would start at the front for the second heat. The young driver would easily lead his first lap from the drop of the green flag. He would eventually be passed by the veterans, but with an impressive 6th place finish, he hints at the talent that is coming up in the series.

Drew Dilbeck finds himself in an odd situation with the FRL, not quite a rookie in the series, not quite a veteran either. But any doubts as to his talents as a driver can be put to rest. He would end up having an abyssmal first heat at Bathurst. Several mis-queues on the track would have him wind up in 9th place at the end of that first heat. But with the reverse grid start for the 2nd, he would take advantage of the nearly wide open road in front of him. He had to fight hard to get around Tom Henderson, and he would be passed by a couple of veteran drivers, but in the end would finish P4 in the second heat. An impressive finish and showing continued improvement from last seasons FEC debut.

Allen Ruff had a rough (pun intended) weekend of racing. On Thursday night he showed up with virtually no seat time and a new tune to get settled into. That lack of preparation showed on the track as he only just managed a sub-three minute qualifying time. However, come Sunday night, he'd show marked improvement. The first heat was a wash and connection failure would score him a DNF. But in the second heat, he would turn a 2:17.246, which could have put him right in the thick of the field. What will a little seat time and track prep do for this driver? We'll have to see.

Now lets look a little closer at the points battles that we are going to see play out this season. The individual driver points are something we are all familiar with and taking a look around, there looks to be potential for some heated points battles to come. With Season 5 we've also seen the rise of multi-car teams become a bigger factor. So, with that in mind, team scoring will be kept. Teams scoring doesn't reward the size of the team as it merely takes the points scored by a teams top two drivers and applies them to the overall score. That said, Apex takes away a huge point lead from Bathurst and starts their campaign off right.

Privateer's can also compare their progress against peers as well. Paul Maestri scored big in this segment and no doubt hopes to build on it in the events to come.

Finally, looking at the rookie points battle, Nicholas Hargrove demonstrates that while fast lap times are nice, the fastest single lap does not always put you first across the line.
His 7.5 average placement on the night netted him the 7th position overall and 6 points. Taking an early led over his peers in a battle we will all eagerly watch as it develops.

That's all from Bathurst. Most of the teams and equipment are already long gone and will be getting ready for the Race of United Arab Emirates at the famed Yas Marina circuit.
