Bathurst Qualifying Hints At The Grind That Is To Come

Ten drivers showed up last night to brave the dangers of Australia's notorious Bathurst course and set lap times for Sunday's event. The order for Heat 1 of the Race of Australia on Sunday night will look like this:

Driver: Lap Time:
Andrew Steppat2:07.105
Ethan Maestri2:08.492
Travis Billingsley2:09.260
Bryan Dean2:10.555
Drew Dilbeck2:15.143
Tony Tyree2:16.262
Matthew Smith2:18.894
Nicholas Hargrove2:20.909
Paul Maestri2:30.261
Allen Ruff2:53.249

Several drivers did suffer damage during the qualifying session and never really got a chance to go full tilt around the track. And several drivers turned in some suprising official times due to the punishing nature of the track.

When asked about his pole winning lap time, Andrew Steppat had this to say, "I never felt right driving the car. I just couldn't seem to get settled. But did manage to grab one good lap for pole."

On taking the second spot, Ethan Maestri offered,"It wasn't our best lap here, but it was enough to put us out there ahead of the #18, I wasn't really sure what happened there, I know they are much faster than what they showed. But we got a front row spot so it's time to focus on Sunday now.

Travis Billingsley was ambivilent about his place on the grid. "Getting third on the grid wasn't bad. The biggest thing this track emphasizes to me is just how difficult it is to get clean laps. I think out of the six laps we completed, maybe two of them were clean."

Others were less enthused about how their qualifying session went. Paul Maestri had this to say, "It was a mess for sure. Wrong settings on the car and it seemed like we were constantly on cold tires because of pitting so often."

After the qualifying session was over, the collision damage was turned on and several 15 minute practice sessions began. There was lots of mayham, but not as bloody as imagined. Nearly every driver noted that they learned something about driving in traffic, leaving a gap will be essential heading over the mountain, and passing will come at a premium.

We look forward to the race Sunday night as the FRL tackles Mt. Panorama at 9 PM Central.
